Stimulus bill features 30 percent tax credit for qualifying energy-efficient windows
The $789 billion stimulus bill signed by President Obama includes a substantial tax credit for energy-efficient home improvements. Energy-efficient windows are specifically called out in the bill.
The credit, in the case of an individual, allows a 30 percent credit for the sum of:
- The amount paid or incurred by the taxpayer during such taxable year for qualified energy efficiency improvements, and
- The amount of the residential energy property expenditures paid or incurred by the taxpayer during such taxable year.
To receive the tax credit, windows must meet specific criteria, including a U-factor of .30 or less. Under the heading ‘Modifications of Standards for Qualified Energy Efficiency Improvements’ the bill reads:

(4) QUALIFICATIONS FOR EXTERIOR WINDOWS, DOORS, AND SKYLIGHTS- Such term shall not include any component described in subparagraph (B) or (C) of paragraph (2) unless such component is equal to or below a U factor of 0.30 and SHGC of 0.30. |
The bill also clarifies that “amendments made by this section shall apply to taxable years beginning after December 31, 2008.”
